Say G-Bye to G-Strings…

VULVAL CARE: We explore how simplicity and comfort are the keys.

Cleansing

Your vagina and vulva are an ecosystem with ‘good’ bacteria and naturally-released oils. Harsh soaps, perfumed soaps, feminine sprays, abrasive washes, disinfectants, and wet wipes can all disrupt the natural oils and the balance of the pH. This can lead to the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, dermatitis, vulval sensitivity, and pain (vulvodynia).

We recommend cleansing with either a soap-free cleanser, sorbolene cream, or saline (salt water). You can make saline at home with two teaspoons of salt mixed in a litre of warm water.

Use a barrier cream if the skin feels irritated (Bepanthen, Sudocrem, or MooGoo).

Cotton underwear will assist you in keeping your vagina and vulva happy.

Avoid irritants (<-also great life advice!):

  • The plastic backing in pads for menstruation or urinary incontinence can cause vulval irritation. Choose pads that are ‘breathable’. Or try menstrual or incontinence underwear www.modibodi.com/

  • The bleach and perfume in toilet paper can also be irritating, so choose hypoallergenic toilet paper

  • If you go swimming, especially in a chlorinated pool, take off your bathers and shower off excess chlorine as soon as possible

  • Avoid nylon underwear, tight pants, and G-strings. Wear cotton underwear and avoid washing clothes with strong detergents

  • Use non-latex condoms and water-based glycerine lubricants, and avoid sexual intercourse until any genital irritation has passed.
