Could you be pregnant? Some obvious and less obvious signs.

Do you have a niggling feeling that you might be pregnant? Is your body experiencing some subtle changes, but you’re yet to complete a home pregnancy test? If you’ve been trying to fall pregnant, and are feeling hopeful that you might have conceived, today we’re sharing some of the obvious, and less obvious signs of early pregnancy. These symptoms might just guide you towards the answer you’re hoping for - until you can see your GP to have everything confirmed…

A missed period: One of the most obvious signs of pregnancy. If your period is late and you are sexually active, you should take a pregnancy test. You can purchase these tests from your chemist, and oftentimes now in Coles and Woolies. The general advice here is: you’re more likely to get a false negative, than a false positive result.

Nausea and vomiting: Many women experience nausea and vomiting, especially in the morning, hence the term ‘morning sickness’. This can start as early as two weeks after conception. You’ll often see TV characters test themselves after unexpectedly throwing up - it’s a cliche (scene) for a reason!

Breast changes: During pregnancy, your breasts may feel sore, swollen, or tender. Your nipples may also darken and become more sensitive. If you experience tenderness or if you notice new lumps, please see your trusted GP. Changes in breast tissue should always be examined. Go early, don’t wait, get them checked out.

Fatigue: Many women experience fatigue during the early weeks of pregnancy, as your body is working very hard to create the placenta - essential for your baby’s growth and development. If you’re a mother already, you might be feeling quite tired from chasing little ones, regardless, so this (fatigue) is not always the most obvious symptom.

Fatigue is a common symptom of pregnancy.

Frequent urination: When you’re pregnant your body produces more blood and your kidneys work harder to filter waste. This can result in more frequent trips to the bathroom. If you’ve not been able to sit through a whole movie at the cinema lately - this might be why...

Food cravings or aversions: Many women experience food cravings (easily appeased here in Adelaide!) during pregnancy. On the flip side, you may also develop aversions to some of the foods you typically enjoy. Your once beloved chicken curry or our renowned Adelaide Hills cheeses - their scents might suddenly make you feel ill. Rest assured, this will eventually pass.

Not all women experience the same early signs of pregnancy, and few will experience them all at once (thankfully). Some women may not experience any symptoms at all.
